Abstract : In the present study, 30 pure monoterpenes were tested for their toxicity against first, second and third instars larvae and adults of Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata Say). The majority of tested compounds were found to be toxic to the larvae and the adults, however variable degree of toxicity with a range of 20-100% mortality. In general, monoterpene hydrocarbons exhibited high toxicity as compared with oxygenated monoterpenes. Among the tested monoterpene hydrocarbons, β-pinene, γ-terpinene, 3-carene as well as myrcene showed strong toxicity against all instars larvae. On the other hand, 1,8-cineole, fenchone, linalool and terpinen-4-ol were more toxic against the larvae as compared with the toxicities of other oxygenated monoterpenes. Borneol, fenchol, geranyl acetate, menthol, nerol acetate and α-terpineol showed weak toxicity against the larvae, whereas no significant toxicity was observed for isomenthol against the larvae. Some tested compounds showed different toxicities against both adults and larvae. For instance, menthone was more toxic against the adults than the larvae. Likewise, monoterpene hydrocarbons showed the higher toxicity against the adults than oxygenated monoterpenes. Limonene, α-pinene and β-pinene caused 100% mortality against the adults at two doses after 24 h of exposure. Among the tested oxygenated monoterpenes, 1,8-cineole, fenchone and menthone were much more effective against the adults. The present results indicated that 1,8-cineole, fenchone, β-pinene and γ-terpinene can be used as potential control agents against both the larvae and adults of Colorado potato beetle.

Abstract : Recent studies proved that monoterpenoids could be an alternative to synthetic insecticides against stored-product pests. For that reason, it is necessary to learn the mode of action of these monoterpenoids. Inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity as a possible mode of action by 8 monoterpenoids which cause high mortality of three stored-product insect pests, Sitophilus oryzae L. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), Rhyzopertha dominica Fabricius (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) and Cryptolestes pusillus Schönherr (Coleoptera: Cucujidae) and the role of these monoterpenoids as inhibitors were examined. Inhibition of AChE was measured by colorimetric method where a chemical reaction with enzyme acetylcholinesterase, a substrate (acetylthiocoline iodide), the Ellman's reagent and each monoterpenoid as inhibitor was carried out. The majority of monoterpenoids tested inhibited the enzyme acetylcholinesterase; fenchone, S-carvone and linalool produced the highest inhibition. Furthermore, it was observed that fenchone, γ-terpinene, geraniol and linalool showed a reversible competitive inhibition at least at the enzyme's hydrophobic active site. S-carvone, estragole and camphor produced a mixed inhibition for this enzyme binding to either the free enzyme or the enzyme-substrate complex which links to a different site from the active site where the substrate binds. No inhibition of enzyme acetylcholinesterase by E-anethole was observed.

Title : Acaricidal activity of constituents identified in Foeniculum vulgare fruit oil against Dermatophagoides spp. (Acari: Pyroglyphidae).

Abstract : Acaricidal activities of components derived from Foeniculum vulgare fruit oil against Dermatophagoides farinae and Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus were examined using direct contact application and compared with that of the commercial repellent benzyl benzoate. The major biologically active constituent of Foeniculum fruit oil was characterized as (+)-fenchone by spectroscopic analyses. On the basis of LD(50) values, the compound most toxic to D. farinae was p-anisaldehyde (11.3 mg/m(2)) followed by (+)-fenchone (38.9 mg/m(2)), (-)-fenchone (41.8 mg/m(2)), benzyl benzoate (89.2 mg/m(2)), thymol (90.3 mg/m(2)), and estragol (413.3 mg/m(2)). Against D. pteronyssinus, p-anisaldehyde (10.1 mg/m(2)) was much more effective than benzyl benzoate (67.5 mg/m(2)), thymol (68.5 mg/m(2)), and estragol (389.9 mg/m(2)). These results indicate that the acaricidal activity of F. vulgare fruit oil likely results from (+)-fenchone and p-anisaldehyde. (+)-Fenchone was 20.3 times more abundant in the oil than p-anisaldehyde. (+)-Fenchone and p-anisaldehyde merit further study as potential house dust mite control agents or as lead compounds.
